Winter Camping In California
CALIFORNIA WINTER CAMPING
Five Destinations To Enjoy This Winter Season
Although most of us tend to hibernate during the winter months, there are a host of brave RV’ers and campers who venture out to see nature in all of its winter luster. Winter camping can be peaceful with less competition over camp sites and less human interference in your enjoyment of the great outdoors. Waking up in your RV to a quiet, mystic snow falling over your campsite or experiencing the grandeur of the desert without the searing summer heat can become one of your greatest camping memories.
Here is a rundown of some amazing camping destinations for you and yours to enjoy this winter season.
Joshua Tree National Park. For desert camping, put Joshua Tree National Park on the top of your list. This park’s expansive geography is larger than Rhode Island and boasts three diverse ecosystems: the higher Mohave Desert, the lower Colorado Desert and the San Bernardino Mountains. Within the park, massive rock formations known as inselbergs attract climbers year around. But even if climbing is not your thing, you and your family will find the twisted, cactus-like Joshua trees reaching toward the electric blue sky worthy of pause and reflection. This park is located in the Southern California desert by Twentynine Palms.
If the idea of camping for you also includes soaking in nature’s version of the jacuzzi, then venture out to Agua Caliente County Park, 910 acres with geothermally heated springs. The park is located just west of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, in eastern San Diego County, California. With an elevation of 1,350 feet above sea level and an area of 1,422 miles, it boasts just under four miles of hiking trails and is open from Labor Day weekend to the last weekend of May.
The Los Padres National Forest is home to a plethora of campgrounds and natural wonders for the winter camper. It includes the Julia Pfeiffer State Park, McWay Falls, Limekiln State Park, Gaviota State Park and Mt. Pinos. Each of these destinations within this national forest offer unique winter camping experience
4. The Julia Pfeiffer State Park, located in Big Sur, CA, offers breathtaking, sweeping views of rugged, rocky steeps over the blue Pacific ocean. The park stretches from the Big Sur coastline into nearby 3,000-foot ridges. It features redwood, tan oak, madrone, chaparral, and an 80-foot waterfall that drops from granite cliffs into the ocean from the Overlook Trail.
5. Mt. Pinon In The Los Padres National Forest. While the Mt. Pinon campgrounds are generally closed during the winter season, any winter camper would be remiss in not visiting the small, quaint community of Pine Mountain Club, CA. Pine Mountain Club is an unincorporated private community in southwestern Kern County. It is one of the Mountain Communities of the Tejon Pass and boasts an elevation of 5,554 feet.
This breathtaking mountain community is regularly visited by California brown
bears in addition to the healthy population of more elusive California mountain
lions, raccoon, deer and coyotes.
Situated within this rich forest is the El Tejon Ranch, a vast stretch of over
240,000 acres, and is the largest protected national land mass in the state.
If choose to winter vacation at Mt. Pinon, you can find numerous hikes ranging
from easy to difficult. There are also designated areas for sledding, truly
memorable mountain bike riding trails and even plenty of areas for off-roading.
Whether you are looking for the mild, gentle breezes swirling around in
California’s high deserts this winter season, or long to experience the quiet,
scenic beauty of a fresh snowfall from your RV or trailer, these California
camping destinations offer a rich variety of experiences.
